Through open bow doors, conveyor belts with a width of 50 meters pick up waste from the water surface up to 10 meters of water depth from the sea. The collected waste is sorted first. This is mostly done fully automatically and is necessary to ensure a smooth recycling process. First the waste is shredded into granules. Fishing nets (ghost nets) have to be treated separately, as the nets have to be cut up. After that granulate has to be rinsed to remove any salt residues still present.
The sorted waste is passed through a high temperature hydrolysis plant and produces an emission-free technical gas in a closed system. The technical gas produced consists largely of hydrogen and is used for the plant on board.
